Fall 2008 Impressions

So it’s been about 2, 3 weeks since the fall season’s officially started. A lot of people have claimed this to be a season filled with awesomeness, me included, and many of the shows do not disappoint, and another few have surpassed what low expectations I had of them. In this post, because I’m really bad with the follow-through, I’ll just do a one-shot impressions post covering CHAOS;HeAD, Toaru Majutsu no Index, ToraDora, CLANNAD ~after story~, Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka, and pretty much almost all of the bigger shows of the season. Actual impressions after the jump.

CHAOS;HeAD
The show was more or less faithful to the game, though some material was skipped. Middling production values and inconsistent quality throughout the show. It’s well done close up, but they don’t so good in distance shots. The gore factor has actually been turned down, if we’re talking realism. A lot of the “messy” shots don’t have that high of a quality so they don’t look all that nice. Voice acting was good too, and thank goodness it’s by the same cast. Music was sort of okay, but that was it. The OP theme just isn’t as good as find the blue and ED has lol Engrish.

Toaru Majutsu no Index
Off to a good start. Railgun girl is moe, Index is moe. Production values are quite high, and the story is interesting enough. Music is okay and OP is quite nice too.

ToraDora
Pretty good slice of life, love comedy. Typical Kugyuu tsundere urusai urusai urusai role with the added bonus of physical violence.

CLANNAD ~after story~
Need I say more?

Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka
Suprisingly good, for just another eroge adaptation. Looks like there will be spies and giant robots and explosions and stuff too, which sounds like a recipe for awesomeness. And Kugimiya does NOT do a tsundere (holy crap). Also, there is a Nanoha.

Hyakko
Humor can be very hit-or-miss, but is pretty entertaining at times. Facial expressions feel somewhat jumpy, but maybe it’s because it’s an unfamiliar studio doing this. And V (Vivaldi’s Winter) in episode one.

Kannagi
Lucky Star Kannagi is pretty good. Looks to be a nice slice-of-life comedy, which I am a total sucker for. Animation is quite fluid and story is, well, unique, at least.

Tales of the Abyss
Luke is annoying. Mieu is annoying. But Tear makes it worth it. Production values are above-average, and most of the fun stems from just watching while knowing that’s going to happen.

Kurogane no Linebarrel
Likewise, Koichi is annoying. He can go die along with Luke and Takumi. Feels very old school, sans the CG mecha. Otherwise, it’s actually not too bad, but the story feels like I’ve seen this before (haven’t we all).

Gundam 00 Season 2

俺がガンダム

ef -a tale of melodies-
Continuing from the previous series’s plot; visuals are less avant-garde, and quality feels a little nicer compared to last time. Not sure if I should watch it weekly or marathon it.

Yozakura Quartet
So-so animation. I like the scarf. The story doesn’t seem to be that disjointed and poorly paced, unlike the manga (apparently). Nothing else really stands out.

Shikabanehime Aka
Gainax, which means lots of dynamic (weird) angles. Girl + Mac10’s are cool, though her voice actor is… pretty flat. In the not-good way.

Kemeko DX
Like an LSD trip, without the side effects. Plus a catchy OP and a moemoe MM. Totally surpassed all my expectations of it.

Ga-rei Zero
GIANT ROLLING CG DINOSAUR ON FIRE. And then everyone dies. Surprisingly good.

Hakushaku to Yousei
Not so bad, though it gives off a shoujo vibe (go figure). But then it might not be. I like Lydia’s hair though. And Raven needs to talk more. (sugita fanboyism)

In short:

Worth following:
CHAOS;HeAD
Toaru Majutsu no Index
ToraDora
CLANNAD ~after story~
Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka
Kannagi
Tales of the Abyss (just remind yourself that Luke will change around halfway through the show)
ef -a tale of melodies-
Kemeko DX
Ga-Rei Zero

So-so/Preference-dependent:
Hyakko
Gundam 00
Kurogane no Linebarrel
Yozakura Quartet
Shikabanehime Aka
Hakushaku to Yousei

Avoid like the plague:
Rosario†Vampire (or however that went)
Other stuff that you avoid based on common sense

Yeah, so this season’s pretty awesome.

I’m enjoying Hyakko and Kannagi. Yes, Tear in Tales of the Abyss, woot XD. ToraDora is excellent. Chaos;Head was surprising (never played the game).

Enjoying Hyakko, Y-Quartet, and yea Chaos;Head since I never played the game. Casshern is good too, and Tytania. Still awaiting Shikabane Hime, judging from first episode is just not enough for me.

You’re right, it really is nice to hear Kugimiya’s non-tsundere voice.

Otherwise, my top pick this season is definitely ef. I’m addicted to that show XD

Hyakko and Kemeko are just awful. Everything else is mostly right on.

Yozakura’s doing pretty well on television. The story flows more smoothly than it does in the manga (an obvious benefit of not breaking it up into chapters). Great rockish soundtrack too, although they don’t use it as often as they should.

I’ve got mixed feelings about Clannad A.S., but Ep2 was good.

My pre-season enthusiasm for ef-a.t.o.m has mostly ebbed away, so I’ll put that on the back burner for now (possible candidate for future marathonning, like I did with season 1). Taking its place: Kannagi. I’ve seen too many good reviews of that one to keep ignoring it.

Marcus, I keep nagging myself to get to it, but I’ve never had the free time to. At least, until now.
Panther, that reminds me, I need to get to watching Casshern Sins sometime soon. And Shikabanehime Aka isn’t excellent by any standards; it’s not doing anything bad (voice acting aside) but it’s not doing anything exceptional either. I guess I’ll give it a few episodes more.
Eternal, ef is good indeed :3
Yamcha, Hyakko is mediocre for me, at times funny, but most times meh. I guess randomness-type humor isn’t your thing, though?
Diego, And episode three is just as good. Looks like Sunohara’s arc will be done by episode 5 or so.
